Call for Prayer
By the Rev. Linda Prendergast, pastor of Pinole United Methodist Church
During the 2012 Annual Conference Session, our conference unanimously passed "Item 24: Recommendation Calling for the Protection of Iranian Dissidents in Iraq." To that end, the United Methodist Churches of West Contra Costa County have been working alongside a group of Iranian-Americans who are working to protect more than 3000 Iranian refugees in Camps Ashraf and Liberty in Iraq.
On September 1, 2013, 100 civilians living in Camp Ashraf were attacked, killing 52. Seven others are missing, six of them women. The U.N. condemned the attack and called on the Iraqi government to investigate.
Our Persian friends who come to Pinole UMC find great comfort in how familiar our liturgies and words are — many attend a United Methodist church while growing up.
I ask that you pray for these people, educate your congregations, and call or write your U.S. Representatives and members of Congress asking for the safe evacuation of all the people in Ashraf and Liberty.
