Western Jurisdiction BMCR Meets in Oakland

The Bay Area Caucus of Black Methodists for Church Renewal (BMCR) recently hosted the Western Jurisdiction Annual Meeting. Church leaders from the California-Nevada and California-Pacific Conferences gathered at Downs Memorial UMC in Oakland for the daylong event. In addition to communion and the normal business meeting, participants were briefed about General and Jurisdictional Conferences 2016 by the Rev. Dr. Dale Weatherspoon who is a Jurisdictional Conference delegate from California-Nevada Conference. The Rev. Gary Bernard Williams, pastor of Faith and Hamilton UMCs in Los Angeles, led an afternoon workshop session entitled, "What are we going to do about the violence in our community?" Williams' churches are involved in efforts in South Los Angeles to quell the recent uptick in gang violence. The Rev. Dr. Cedrick D. Bridgeforth, national chair of BMCR, also addressed the group. Ruth Conley, a layperson from Wesley UMC Los Angeles, was celebrated as the outgoing jurisdiction chair, and the Rev. Anthony Jenkins, pastor of Taylor Memorial UMC Oakland, was elected the new chair.
