First Church of Redding Celebrates National Night Out

August 20, 2014

As part of the desire to build a beloved community, a community with, as our 2014 annual conference theme suggested, First Church of Redding threw a block party in their parking lot on August 5, 2014 to celebrate National Night Out.

First Church of Redding is situated in an older downtown neighborhood called the Garden Tract, this area also includes the Wesley Neighborhood, a low-income housing project started by the church several years ago.  The church and neighborhood families participated in activities including beach ball volleyball, disc golf and Qi Gong (yoga), while the children delighted in the bounce house, hula-hoops and bubbles.  Church musicians provided background music as well as an opportunity for folks to participate in a drum circle. Church member, Scott Halsey, owner of Halsey Kempo Karate, arranged for several of his students to give a Karate demonstration.  (Scott offers free Karate lessons at the church for neighborhood children each Friday).  Church members as well as local farmers provided refreshments.  Joining in the festivities were two other “neighbors”: One Safe Place, a local organization working toward alleviation of domestic violence, and Shasta Community Health Center, which has a clinic in the neighborhood.  SCHC offered free children’s books as well as information about their services.  The Redding Police Department, Shasta County Sheriff’s Department, and the California Highway Patrol sent officers to visit as well.   Ministries Coordinator, Peggy Rebol stated, “It was a great way for us to love our neighbors!”
