Mary Elizabeth Inn Kicks Off 100 Day Campaign

Mary Elizabeth Inn, a national mission institution of the United Methodist Church located in San Francisco, is celebrating 100 years of providing safe and affordable housing to single women.
On Friday, June 20, during Annual Conference, Connie Hunter and Mary Glide, the great-great granddaughter of Lizzie Glide, who built Mary Elizabeth Inn and Glide Memorial Church, described the services offered by Mary Elizabeth Inn, the celebrations planned during its 100th anniversary, and kicked off the 100 day campaign to ‘give your change to change women’s lives’.
Mary Elizabeth Inn was built in 1914 by Lizzie Glide for the express purpose of providing safe and affordable housing to women of limited means. In 1914, the women who called Mary Elizabeth Inn home had moved to San Francisco to find employment, to attend school or to escape family turmoil. Today women who are survivors of domestic violence, women who are living with a disability, and women who were previously homeless call the Inn home. All have very little income.
Mary Elizabeth Inn has expanded its services and provides housing at the Verona Hotel as well as at its flagship site on Bush St., providing a home to 157 women every night. In addition to providing affordable housing, Mary Elizabeth Inn also provides case management services, provides a computer resource center for the resident’s use, and provides breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday at no additional cost. Mary Elizabeth Inn’s vision is that ‘women across all life’s stages are empowered to achieve self-sufficiency, independence and security’ and the services provided are tailored to achieve that result.
During Mary Elizabeth Inn’s 100th anniversary, we are striving to strengthen our relationship with the members of the United Methodist Churches across the conference. We love to show off our flagship building and we invite you to schedule a visit, to come see.
We have set a goal to raise $50,000 to fund the meals program for a year. Our target is to raise $10,000 from the members and friends of United Methodist Churches across the CA-NV Conference. If each church were to give $30 or if every person attending a church in our conference on an average Sunday were to give 30 cents, we would raise $10,000!
The 100 day campaign to ‘give your change to change women’s lives’ began on Friday, June 20th and culminates on Sunday, September 28th when you can take your offering to your church to have it sent to Mary Elizabeth Inn, or delivered to the celebratory worship service that is planned for Saturday, October 4th at Jones Memorial UMC in San Francisco.
