Defrocked UMC Pastor to Preach at Epworth UMC

May 06, 2014

Frank Schaefer will preach on Sunday, May 25, and will celebrate communion at Epworth United Methodist Church for its Reconciling Ministries Sunday at 10 a.m. Following the service in the adult study at 11:45, Schafer will share the "back story" of how he had to choose whether to obey the Book of Discipline rules, or violate them, in his new book, "A Father's Love." Schaefer, who was a pastor in the Eastern Pennsylvania Annual (regional) Conference, drew national attention when he was put on trial in November. A trial court — or jury — of fellow clergy members found him guilty of violating his vows as an ordained United Methodist elder when he officiated at his son’s same-sex wedding in 2007 and disobedience to the order and discipline of The United Methodist Church. Schaefer was stripped of his credentials on Dec. 19 after he said he could not uphold the denomination’s law book in its entirety. The church is located at 1953 Hopkins St., Berkeley.
