Speaker Calls Laity the Gospel on the Ground
March 25, 2014
“The laity is the Gospel on the ground,” said Derrick Scott III, executive director of the Campus to City Wesley Foundation in Northeast Florida to approximately 20 lay leaders during the event “My Call To Lay Ministry” at Castro Valley United Methodist Church. Scott is also an associate conference lay leader in the Florida Annual Conference with an intergenerational focus.
The day began with the Rev. Sam Yun, convener for the Leadership Development focus of the California-Nevada Annual Conference, grounding the group with the words found in Matthew 5 challenging them to be “salt and light.” Yun and Scott had a conversation about Scott’s call to lay ministry. Scott spoke about Nehemiah, Ester, and Timothy not being ordained, but moving the mission of God forward. Scott said, “Here in the United States, the Methodist movement was started by lay people in their neighborhoods.”
Scott believes the Spirit literally calls lay people into active lay ministry.
