Worship Artists

Rev. Dr. Theresa Mason will preach for the Opening Worship service Wednesday evening at Annual Conference Session June 18.

 

Dr. Mason has woven the arts, faith and social justice together throughout her life, using piano, ventriloquism, theatre and preaching. She is a clergy member of the California-Nevada Conference. She has recently served as chaplain and associate professor of religion at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota, along with being director for a theatre group, Spirit-Bound Players.

 

Dr. Mason is the creator of the 20 ft. tall puppets that have graced our Annual Conference worship celebrations in the past.

 

 

Dr. L. Martina Young will offer the sacred expression of dance during the Bishop's Retirement Celebration Service Friday evening at Annual Conference Session June 20.

 

Recipient of the 2008 (Nevada) Governor's Arts Award for Excellence in the Arts, the state's highest arts award, this artist, educator and arts advocate also is a three-year Fellow with the National Endowment for the Arts. She has worked in theatre, opera, music video and film, collaborating as a solo artist with luminaries such as Stevie Wonder and Les McCann. Dr. Young has taught on the faculties of The College of William and Mary, California Institute of the Arts, and the Los Angeles County High School for the Arts, and was a tenured faculty and Director of Dance for the University of Nevada, Reno 1987-1994. She is co-architect of Nevada's K-12 Dance in Education standards.

The Right Reverend Chester Lovelle Talton, D.D., Suffragan Bishop of the Los Angeles Diocese of the Episcopal Church, will preach the sermon for the service of Commissioning and Ordination at Annual Conference Session on Saturday, June 21 at 3:30 p.m. Bishop Talton will join Bishop Beverly J. Shamana in ordaining the Elders and Deacons as the ecumenical representative.

 

Bishop Talton was elected in 1990 and installed in 1991 as Fifth Bishop Suffragan of Los Angeles. He was previously rector of St. Philip's Church, New York City, and a member of the clergy staff of the Wall Street Parish of Trinity Church, New York. He is a graduate of Church Divinity School of the Pacific in Berkeley, California.

 

As Bishop Suffragan, Bishop Talton assists in the oversight of the ministries and administration of the Diocese of Los Angeles. He also shares responsibility for ministries to the Deacons, higher education, Episcopal Schools, and Social Ministries within the diocese.
