Cal-Nevadans Featured in Online Documentary; Screenings Available
9/20/2012
The online version of a documentary tracking the progress of inclusion legislation at the 2012 General Conference is available to watch on YouTube – and churches are invited to host screenings of the longer version, being edited now in preparation for a PBS half-hour scheduled to air later this year.
The Other Convention: A Church Votes on Gay Rights was produced by The Center for Investigative Reporting in Berkeley, California. It follows some members of the California-Nevada Annual Conference from their home churches to Tampa, Florida (site of the 2012 General Conference), and documents their experiences at the convention and their reactions to the action on legislation seeking to modify the Church's stance on human sexuality issues.
The filmmakers are in the process of editing a longer, more in-depth version with less narration to be aired on PBS. Co-producer Adithya Sambamurthy told Instant Connection they've been told to aim for a late October or November broadcast.
The documentary will be available for public screenings at churches, seminaries and other spaces. A live panel discussion/Q&A with some of the principals in the project can be arranged as part of a screening, particularly in northern California.
