The California-Nevada Annual Conference Committee on Young People's Ministry hopes to provide opportunities for connection and resources to support the local church in its ministry with young people.
This fall, your youth group (Junior and Senior High) will have two opportunities to serve and grow with other youth groups from around the Conference.
On Sept. 22, we will host a service opportunity: a workday at the Waller Street Project. This is the site in San Francisco that the Board of Camping and Retreat Ministry is in the process of renovating to be an urban and community ministry center, providing a place for groups to stay and meet while serving in ministry in the city. Our workday will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are planning a community e-waste drive, as well as projects in the building itself. Lunch will be provided, and there is an option for your group to spend the night. For details and to sign up, contact me at 916.374.1515 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
Nov. 16-18, we will put on a Conference-wide youth event at Mt. Hermon in Santa Cruz, California. The Committee on Young People's Ministry has been blessed to form a partnership in ministry with Tsunami Ministry Programs of North Carolina. Tsunami Ministry was founded by Steve Keaton, who was the emcee at Youth 2011. He has expanded his youth ministry program from the local church level to include weekend events, known as the "FX" experience. These yearly events have grown from 65 youth in the first year to now, more than 1,800 over two weekend events.
Last year, I travelled to North Carolina to witness the blessings and the amazing experience of an FX event, and knew we had to bring it west for our Conference. Steve and his team have been gracious enough to volunteer to come and help us start the "FX" experience West Coast!
It is a fast-paced, high-energy weekend of multimedia worship and music, inspiring speakers, sports, and games – within a community of fellowship for your Methodist youth.
Steve Keaton (at right) is not only the founder and president of Tsunami Ministries, but also the minister of students at Mt. Tabor United Methodist Church in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. He is a 20 year-plus veteran of youth ministry, and in high demand for speaking at (and emceeing) youth events worldwide. He has a passion for sharing God's word in a style that is both entertaining and inspirational. Steve will be the speaker for our FX weekend.
Charlie Brown will serve as the emcee. Known as the "Greatest Hype-man in Youth Ministry," Charlie is simply the biggest kid in the room. In addition to being the minister of youth at Weddington UMC in North Carolina, he also is the director of creativity for Tsunami Ministries. He is passionate about providing youth with opportunities to develop strong foundations for lifelong service to God.
Tide Rising will be the worship band for our FX weekend. Tide Rising is Tsunami Ministries' "house band," putting to use the musical gifts of its members to glorify God. With music ranging from intimate acoustic to full-on rock, Tide Rising has a varied look and sound that is always appropriate to the setting. You can be assured that the music it brings will generate a quality, genuine worship experience.
In addition to the scheduled worship and speaker sessions, there will be recreational options and the ever-popular "Highland" games, a multi-sport mini tournament of mixed-age-and-gender teams. In addition, for an additional cost, your group may participate in the optional activities offered by Mt. Hermon, such as the ropes course and zip-lining course through the redwoods.
