United Methodist Volunteers in Mission (UMVIM) teams sponsored and coordinated by the First United Methodist Church of Santa Rosa are an active bunch. They travelled to Mississippi twice after Hurricane Katrina struck; to Fernley, Nevada following a levee break; to Cedar Rapids, Iowa following a flood; to Galveston, Texas after Hurricane Ike; and, together with the entire California-Nevada Annual Conference, came alive to financially help the victims of the earthquakes and tsunami in Japan.
This year, for two weeks in early October, the FUMC Santa Rosa-sponsored team is turning its attention to Henryville, Indiana to help rebuild homes and lives decimated by a monstrous multi-vortex tornado that ripped through the area earlier this year, damaging or destroying numerous structures. So far, the team consists of 33 people – from one Catholic and two United Methodist churches in Santa Rosa; Habitat for Humanity of Santa Rosa; and one Presbyterian and three UM churches in Novato, Merced, and Tulare. Both the Rev. Blake Busick, pastor of FUMC Santa Rosa, and the Rev. Joe Major, pastor of Tulare UMC, will take part in the mission.
