At the 2012 Annual Conference Session, the 2012 Bishop Melvin Talbert Award for Racial Justice went to the Rev. Schuyler Rhodes, pastor of Temple United Methodist Church in San Francisco. In presenting the award, Eveline Koloto from the Conference Commission on Religion and Race noted that Rhodes, "from the beginning, worked at turning an inward-focused church in decline to a growing, outward-looking Christian community centered in mission, discipleship, and ministry. He has worked tirelessly in building relationships across the community, resulting in people knowing and trusting the church community."
