Israel/Palestine Task Force

The Israel-Palestine Task Force joins the No Way to Treat a Child campaign

Help us SUPPORT PALESTINIAN CHILDREN’S RIGHTS

Join us in asking President Obama to appoint a Special Envoy for Palestinian Youth.  Speaking directly with youth, human rights & legal experts, NGOs, Palestinian and Israeli officials, including police and military, a Special Envoy would work to ensure greater human rights for Palestinian youth - as well as establish a framework of engagement by the next U.S. administration. ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF THE TASK FORCE:

Since its founding in 2007, the Israel/Palestine Task Force of the California-Nevada Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church has worked to educate ourselves and our faith communities about what is happening to Palestinians in the Holy Land by:
  • Working with our partner organizations to bring or sponsor noted speakers into our churches and communities.
  • Speaking, offering classes, and participating in forums at churches, synagogues and mosques in Northern California and Nevada.
  • Advocating within our churches and communities, our Conference, and the UMC General Conference for policies and programs that promote justice for all people in the Holy Land.

SUPPORT OF OUR MISSIONARY:

The Task Force supports Janet Lahr Lewis and relies on her guidance and resources for our work on the ground. Janet is a UMC missionary with the Board of Global Ministries serving in the Middle East as liaison between ecumenical groups, Israel and Palestine. She has spoken at Task Force meetings and in several of our churches, and guided GBGM mission trips in which we have participated.

ENGAGEMENT WITH PALESTINIANS:

All of our members have been to Israel and the West Bank. Several have lead tours. One member is a frequent volunteer at Hope School, in Beit Jala, near Bethlehem. The Task Force has supported the work of the Wadi Foquin Partnership and Sindyanna.

THE TASK AHEAD:

The Task Force is working to implement our charge from the resolution passed at the 2009 Annual Conference, Leveraging the Power of United Methodist Investment Portfolios to Affect Faithful and Positive Change in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. We are partnering with UMKR and with United Methodist conferences throughout the country to build support for divestment and to address the resolution on Settlements that was passed in the 2012 General Conference.
