Nevada City UMC recently completed a three session Listening to Legacies program, in which youth 11-14 learned in Session 1 about 1-the importance of elders' stories and 2-listening skills. In Session 2, they each interviewed an elder about their lives, and in Session 3, they shared in Sunday School what they had learned about their interviewees.
Cooperation of Sunday School teachers and older adults was appreciated by the Conference Older Adult Ministry Council, which is the sponsor of this program. Each Conference church received one copy of the Listening to Legacies booklet in early January. This program is one good way to celebrate Older Americans month during May.
More information on how to celebrate in May is available on the denomination's website for the Center for Aging and Older Adult Ministry, c/o Dr. Richard Gentzler. In our Conference, contact Rev. Dr. Judith Pruess-Mellow, 650-823-0559, or Susan Harlan, MA, 510-701-4243, both of the Older Adult Ministry Council. Marilyn Wilson of Grass Valley UMC is Council Chair and plans to use Listening to Legacies there in May with confirmands.
