Goto Appointed District Superintendent for El Camino Real District
It is with joy that I announce that I am appointing the Rev. Shinya Goto to serve as the next District Superintendent for the El Camino Real District effective July 1, 2017. For the past five years, he has served as the pastor of San Jose First UMC. Prior to this appointment, he served Wesley UMC in San Jose, and Madera UMC.
The Rev. Shinya Goto, 40, was born in Tokyo, Japan and immigrated to the United States at the age of 12. He has lived in Southern California, the Bay Area, and Seattle.
Shinya says that district superintending is “an important job,” and affirms that he is “looking forward to taking up a new challenge.”
Rev. Goto earned a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Washington in Seattle, and a M.Div. from the Pacific School of Religion (PSR) in Berkeley.
Shinya is married to the Rev. Jennifer Goto, pastor of St. Paul's UMC San Jose. The couple met while studying at PSR and married 14 years ago. They are the proud parents of two children, a son Dakota who is 12, and a daughter Reina who is six.
This appointment comes as a direct result of the action taken during the 2017 Annual Conference Session last week to create a fifth district in the California-Nevada Annual Conference. Increasing the number of districts from four to five is to enable us to give more focused attention to the work of creating new places of ministry in areas where populations are growing and restarting congregations where a new start would bring vitality to the work God calls us to do. With the addition of a fifth district, we pray that we will be in a better position to also intentionally assist established churches committed to taking the next step in their spiritual growth, stewardship commitment, and in welcoming others to know, love, and serve Christ Jesus to take that critical step.
The new five district structure is as follows: Bay District, Central Valley District, El Camino Real District, Great Northern District, and Sacramento District.
Effective July 1, 2017, I am appointing:
- Rev. Staci Current as district superintendent of the Bay District,
- Rev. Debra Brady as district superintendent of the Central Valley District,
- Rev. David Samelson as district superintendent of the Great Northern District, and
- Rev. Schuyler Rhodes as district superintendent of the Sacramento District.
I strongly believe that the addition of a district and district superintendent to our Cabinet will enable us to do better work in leading our conference in our missional strategy for faithful growth. I know that Rev. Shinya Goto will strengthen our Cabinet through his gifts and grace and deep commitment to Christ Jesus. Organizational restructuring, however, does not in and of itself grow a faithful church. Faithful discipleship that bears good fruit is dependent on our commitment to Christ and our willingness to follow wherever He leads. May we be faithful to Christ, above all.
