Bergquist and Yun Awarded Bishop Brown Award
The Revs. Greg Bergquist and Samuel Yun are the recipients of the Bishop Warner H. Brown, Jr. award.
Bergquist is the associate general secretary for the Division of Ordained Ministry at the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry (GBHEM) overseeing all functions of the division, including the strategic planning for the recruitment and training of United Methodist clergy. Most recently, Bergquist served as conference superintendent for leadership development for the California-Nevada Annual Conference. He has worked with the conference’s Board of Ordained Ministry (BOM) for 16 years in a variety of roles, including chair for the Conference Relations Committee and cabinet representative to BOM. He has more than 30 years of experience in rural, suburban and urban churches across Georgia, Texas and California. Bergquist has also held faculty and instructor positions at the Pacific School of Religion and Southern Methodist University.
Yun, also known as "P. Sam" is the planting pastor for Embrace Church launched in the Bay Area in July 2015. His duties include preaching, vision casting, raising up leaders, counseling and setting the primary spiritual heartbeat of the community. Today, the now multiethnic Embrace Church is reaching about 90 people and is still growing, especially with young families. It has a partnership with Covenant House California, which works to rescue homeless and trafficked teens, and holds weekly worship at Twin Towers UMC in Alameda, California. He is the father of two, lover of all sports with a net, follower of Jesus, and immensely broken but constantly healed and strengthened by the love and grace of God. When not engaged in his all-time favorite activity (preaching), he loves to spend extended times with his two sons watching marathon episodes of "The Office" or engaging in a little Yun family jam session.
